Interview

==========

  • Did you have a choice between two colleges? Any specific reasons for choosing this college?

I had a couple of choices on the colleges. But I chose Ramaiah because I learned from my aunt (a lecturer at Ramaiah Medical College) about the equipments using, which we are going to be trained, which impressed me a lot. Also I got to know that there is an artificial limb center attached to the college, which will probably give me an opportunity to practically learn some of the concepts in Medical electronics.

Also in the third year of Medical Electronics, we study human anatomy and physiology. Since Ramaiah has its own medical college, we get the opportunity to understand human anatomy practically by seeing the organs and the human body. The medical faculty will teach these subjects. One other reason for choosing MSRIT is that it is close to my place.

One other college, which has the advantage of being associated with a medical college, is Dr. Ambedkar institute of technology.

  1. How is the faculty for your branch?

Currently we are not teaming with our branch faculty. This will happen in the second year. Until then we will be studying a combination of subjects from other streams such as Electronics and communication, Instrumentation. To give you a rough idea on how E&C and instrumentation subjects are helpful for our branch – in E &C we learn about transducers, which are required to understand how to convert biological signals to electrical, in instrumentation we learn subjects related to designing.

  1. How are your classmates?

My classmates are good. One thing about Ramaiah is that there are students from abroad in almost every class including mine and it is a little difficult communicating with them.

  1. Any special reasons for choosing this branch?

I could not pursue medicine because of personal reasons. But this field will give me the satisfaction of learning both medicine and technical. More than anything else this branch will give me the opportunity to innovate. I have a dream of inventing an artificial limb, which will integrate seamlessly with the human brain, and I feel that this branch will be the foundation to reach out to the same because medical electronics is all about creating new instruments for the field of medicine.

5. How is the infrastructure (ex. lab, hostel, library)

Labs are really good compared to other colleges. I have seen 2 of the labs. We will be making use of labs from other branches. There is no dearth of resources at Ramaiah. To quote an instance, the mechanical lab here has about 22 lathe machines!!! Now that’s huge. A few of my friends from other colleges are jealous of the infrastructure at Ramaiah J

We have one main library, which is an old building. We have a secondary library, which is a new building with a large number of books on different subjects. There is also an E-library facility. What I have heard is that during exams the library is open for hostilities until late in the night.

The boys hostel is in a bad condition currently. So a new hostel is being constructed. The girls and boys hostels are very close to the college.

There is a Student information system put in place by Ramaiah where in students can access their marks in various tests and attendance. You are probably thinking this is cool.. Well there is one catch – your parents also have access to it. Sometimes it helps if you parents are not computer savvy J

6. Is your college autonomous/deemed? If yes, how does it work (brief on your exams/syllabus).

Our college is autonomous and is affiliated to the Visvesvariah Technological University, Belgaum meaning that our marks sheet will bear the VTU seal. That apart, everything else – from setting question papers to conducting theory and lab exams is handled by the college itself.

The grading system is no more the percentage system. It is a grade point average system also called CGPA. I am not very sure how it works since it has been introduced only this year i.e. in the second semester.

7. Which is the best branch in your college?

It’s the mechanical engineering branch. The faculty is awesome and the labs are superb. In most of the colleges people share instruments in the lab but here each student gets one instrument. As I mentioned earlier there are about 22 lathes in the mechanical lab and new instruments are being purchased.

8. Any other comments.

Well before choosing Ramaiah I had a bad impression about the college cause I had heard that ragging was prevalent here. But I was completely wrong. In fact I did not find any one doing it and people are cool minding their own business.

Also I must say that it’s a huge value for money at Ramaiah. The top colleges in Karnataka charge about 20k while at Ramaiah it is about ¼ of this. So do your math!!

One very important pre-requisite for this branch is that you need to have an inclination for both technical and medical. If you are not interested in bio, this may not be the right option for you. Also I have seen that some people just take up this branch so that they can later change to other branches within the college. Well if that does not happen you will be stuck with a branch which you may probably not enjoy and hence might not satisfy your purpose in life in the long run.
